Investigation by Royal Malaysian Police

Timeline

Day 001 - Saturday, 8 March 2014

Speaking at a news conference on Monday, 17 March 2014 Hishammuddin Hussein, Minister of Defence and Acting Minister of Transport, summarised the status of the investigation by the Royal Malaysia Police:-

Police investigation

On Saturday 8 March, the Royal Malaysia Police started investigations into all crew members on board MH370, including the pilot and co-pilot, as well as all ground staff handling the aircraft.

On Sunday 9 March, police officers visited the homes of the pilot and co-pilot. Officers also spoke to family members of the pilot and co-pilot.

Police visited the homes of the pilot and co-pilot again on Saturday 15 March. The pilot’s flight simulator was taken from his house with the assistance of his family. The simulator was re-assembled at police headquarters.

At this point, I would like to stress that Malaysia has been co-operating with the FBI, Interpol and other relevant international law enforcement authorities since day one.

Day 2 - Sunday, 9 March 2014

KEMAMAN, March 9 ― Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said Malaysian police are working with international intelligence agencies to investigate the missing of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Flight MH370.

He said police were gathering information from various parties apart from reviewing the closed circuit television recordings at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport prior to the departure of flight.

Police were not attributing terrorist threat as the main factor for the disappearance of Flight MH370 but did not rule out such a possibility, he told a media conference here today.

As such, he told the people not to speculate on the identities of the passengers reported to have boarded the aircraft using forged passports.

At a media conference in the federal capital today, Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the names of four passengers who were alleged to be travelling on forged passports had been hand over to local and foreign intelligence agencies for further investigations.

Elaborating further, Khalid said police would also be deploying their personnel to assist in the search and rescue operation.

Day 4 - Tuesday, 11 March 2014

Police have listed four areas to be focussed on in their investigation into the missing Malaysian Airlines (MAS) MH370.

The four possibilities that they are looking at are hijack, sabotage, psychological problem of passengers and crew, and their personal problems.

“For the police investigations, we are focusing on these four areas. Of course the DCA will be focusing on mechanical areas as well. These are the main considerations. Can you suggest something new of concern?,” the Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said to reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Tuesday.

Khalid said the MH370 police probe is headed by Federal CID director Commissioner Datuk Hadi Ho Abdullah, which was initiated as soon as police knew about the disappearance of the Boeing 777-200ER plane.

“We have been talking to people, going through passenger manifest. We have communicated with our counterparts in at least 14 countries of which most of the passengers come from, and also other parts of the world, and we have been exchanging information and intelligence,” said Khalid.

Khalid said that a team of public security officers from China had visited him and held discussions on the incident. He added that the police are also looking through the profiles of all of those on board the flight.

“We are going through the profiles of the passengers and crew. We are also going through all the video footages, the whole day from March 7, 8, and 9. We are checking with all our brother officers from other departments on the background of all the passengers,” he said.

Day 5 - Wednesday, 12 March 2014
  1. KOTA BARU, March 12 — Kelantan police handed over four reports to the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) yesterday to assist in the search for Flight MH370.

Kelantan police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said the first police report was made at 7.45pm on Sunday by a fisherman who claimed to have seen an aircraft flying unusually low at 1.30am while he was at sea.

“The second report was lodged at 2.54pm on Monday by a man in Chabang Empat, Tumpat,” he said.

“He was planting chili at 2am when he saw a plane flying low, at an altitude of about 300ft, and claimed he saw the symbol of a wau (kite) on the aircraft.”

The third report was lodged at 4.15pm by a neighbourhood watch member, who saw a plane flying low and what appeared to be sparks coming from it.

The fourth report was made at 5pm by a Jabatan Agama Islam employee who was in Kampung Pasir Kasar Sering, Kota Baru, and saw an aircraft heading towards the sea at 1.45am.

  3. SHAH ALAM: Police were seen arriving at the residence of <A href="http://english.astroawani.com/news/show/mh370-website-dedicated-to-captain-zaharie-31844">Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah</A>, the pilot of the Flight MH370 at about 2.42pm on Saturday.

This followed Prime Minister <A href="http://english.astroawani.com/news/show/pm-datuk-seri-najib-tun-razaks-press-statement-on-mh370-31877">Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's press conference</A> on the development of the missing Malaysia Airlines (MAS) aircraft.

A check by Bernama noted that three plain clothed police personnel introduced themselves as coming from Bukit Aman police headquarters to the security guard manning the Laman Seri residence at Section 13, here before obtaining a security pass to go in.

It was believed that the police have conducted a search at the pilot's house and all of them were seen leaving the residence at about 4.46pm.

Many media personnel, including from the foreign media, were not allowed by the security to enter the housing area.

The Beijing-bound Boeing 777-200ER aircraft with 227 passengers and 12 crew members on board vanished from radar about an hour after leaving the Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 12.41am last Saturday.

Meanwhile the police will issue an official statement on the inspection of Zaharie's house at a media conference that is scheduled for Sunday.
    "I cannot

make any statement when investigation is still going on," said a police spokesman.

Day 9 - Sunday, 16 March 2014
  1. STRONG>KUALA LUMPUR: Police on Sunday said that so far only China and India have cleared their passengers who boarded the Malaysian Airlines (MAS) MH370 aircraft on March 8.

“There are still a few countries yet to send us background checks, but there are some intelligence agencies that have cleared all passengers,” said the Inspector General of Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

Speaking to reporters at the press conference at Hotel Sama-Sama, Sunday, Khalid said the direction of police probe continues to veer in the direction of a deliberate act by someone as crucial information revealed on Saturday showed that 'someone' on the jet had switched off communications systems and its course deliberately changed.

He said “foreign intelligence agencies” have been able to clear the whole passenger and crew manifest of “any negative reports”.

But Khalid said that investigations are still ongoing on all crew and passengers and police are still awaiting reply from other foreign agencies on “all background checks as yet.”

Khalid reiterated the four main areas of police focus into the investigation of the missing aircraft; hijacking, sabotage, personal problems, and psychological problems.

“It includes ground staff, everybody,” he said.

The new re-focus was based on information that equipments on board the plane was being intentionally turned off and it is understood that police are ‘intensifying the study’.
Meanwhile, asked whether investigators and Malaysia Airlines (MAS) have gone through the

cargo, MAS CEO Datuk Ahmad Jauhari Yahyasaid that there were “no hazardous goods” found on the manifest.

Ahmad Jauhari also said that both pilot and co-pilots "did not ask to fly together".

Day 10 - Monday, 17 March 2014
  1. >A flight engineer who was a passenger on the missing Malaysia Airlines plane is being investigated as the suspicion that it was hijacked hardens.

The aviation engineer is Mohd Khairul Amri Selamat, 29, a Malaysian who has said on social media he had worked for a private jet charter company.

The pilots are also under intense scrutiny, after it was revealed that the co-pilot said  'all right, good night', after someone had begun disabling one of the plane's automatic tracking systems.

Day 12 - Wednesday, 19 March 2014
  1. On the police investigation, as the Inspector General of the Police confirmed, the case has been classified under Section 130C of the Penal Code. All passengers, crew and ground staff handling the aircraft are being investigated.
We are sharing all information relevant to the case with all relevant international investigative agencies that require it. We have received passenger background checks from all countries apart from Ukraine and Russia, both of which had nationals on board. So far, no information of significance on any passengers has been found.
Local and international expertise has been recruited to examine the pilot’ flight simulator. Some data had been deleted from the simulator and forensic work to retrieve this data is on-going.
I would like to take this opportunity to state that the passengers, the pilots and the crew remain innocent until proven otherwise. For the sake of their families, I ask that we refrain from any unnecessary speculation that might make an already difficult time even harder.

  2. PUTRAJAYA, March 19 : Police have found that the information in the flight simulator owned by Malaysia Airlines (<A href="http://www.malaysiaairlines.com/" target="_blank">MAS</A>) pilot Capt Zaharie Ahmad Shah has been mostly deleted, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said the police were using forensics techniques to recover the deleted

    information.

“It must be remembered that the police investigation is not aimed at putting the blame on the pilot or pressuring any of his family members but is being conducted to scrutinise everything in detail to find out the cause of the incident (disappearance of a Malaysian airliner).

“We’re investigating all possibilities,” he told a press conference after a meeting with civil servants here Wednesday.

Malaysia Airlines (<A href="http://www.malaysiaairlines.com/" target="_blank">MAS</A>) flight MH370 went missing on March 8 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board. A multinational search has yet to find the aircraft.

Prior to this, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar had said that the police had taken the simulator from the pilot’s house to be inspected by experts in the hope of finding some new leads into the disappearance of the plane.

“The police are working with several Boeing 777, simulator training and Information Technology experts to inspect the simulator,” said Ahmad Zahid.

He explained that details could not be divulged yet as the investigation was still ongoing.

“I have full confidence in the police. I leave it to the IGP to make the results of the investigation public when it’s completed,” he said.

Ahmad Zahid said the police had also searched the house of co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid but found no leads as to whether he was involved in the flight’s diversion.

He also denied claims that Malaysia was not co-operating with the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Interpol on the mysterious disappearance of flight MH370.

“In fact, we are the ones who have asked for their help as we cannot undertake this investigation alone. Many other countries have their own experience in handling missing aircraft and they also have communication systems which could assist in the search.

“Our main objective is to locate the plane. To that end, we’re collaborating very closely with all international intelligence bodies,” he said.

He also said that security had been tightened and enhanced at every entry point into the country, including the KL International Airport (KLIA).

“We have taken several steps in relation to tighter security. I chaired the meeting on the matter myself,” he said.

  1. During ... press conference at the Sama Sama Hotel in Sepang, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar appeared to suggest that investigators were ready to discount foul play on the part of the passengers, saying that all 227 were cleared by “some” security agencies, notably those from India and China.

Khalid also said the investigation was now classified under Section 130C of the Penal Code that deals with hijacking, sabotage, and other acts of terrorism.

As pressure grew on detectives to focus their attention on the pilots, however, Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein volunteered a possibly crucial fact: Malaysia Airlines said the two men did not request to fly on MH370.

Day 18 - Tuesday, 25 March 2014
  1. KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak wants the Royal Malaysia Police to conduct a thorough investigation from every angle on a lost Malaysia Airlines (MAS) aircraft.

The prime minister said that though the real answer to the mystery of the lost aircraft could only be gleaned from the cockpit conversation recorded in the black box, a thorough investigation must be carried out in a professional manner and with commitment.

"An investigation is most necessary because the families of the victims want an answer quickly. This is a major tragedy which is heart-breaking for people in Malaysia and other nations.

"The mission to trace Flight MH370 was carried out with the police, the armed forces and 26 nations, but a thorough investigation into the cause of incident must be carried out to minimise speculation," he said when launching the 207th Police Day at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) in Jalan Semarak here today.

Najib had announced last night that Flight MH370 "ended in the southern Indian Ocean."

Flight MH370, carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew, left the KL International Airport at 12.41 am on March 8 and disappeared from radar screens about an hour later while over the South China Sea. It was to have landed in Beijing at 6.30 am on the same day.

A multinational search was mounted for the aircraft, first in the South China Sea and then over a large tract of land and sea west of Malaysia, including the Indian Ocean, when it was learned that the plane had veered off course and flown for seven hours after someone deliberately switched off the communication system on board.

The search then focused on two corridors, namely the northern corridor which stretches from the border of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan to northern Thailand, and the southern corridor which stretches from Indonesia to the southern Indian Ocean.

After satellite imagery showed objects which looked like debris, military aircraft and ships of the multinational search team proceeded to the area in the southern Indian Ocean.

Following an unprecedented type of analysis of satellite data, United Kingdom company Inmarsat and the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) informed Najib that they had concluded that Flight MH370 flew along the southern corridor and that its last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean, west of Perth, Australia.

The police had recorded the statements of 50 individuals to help in investigation into the disappearance of the aircraft.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said yesterday that among those who had given their statements were the staff of the Department of Civil Aviation, Royal Malaysian Air Force personnel and the families of the passengers and crew of Flight MH370.

Investigation was confined to the four aspects that were announced previously, namely the possibility of hijack, sabotage, the psychological conditions of the passengers and crew and personal problems of the passengers and crew.

Day 20 - Thursday 27 March 2014
  1. PETALING JAYA: Bukit Aman is wading through uncharted territory in their investigations into the disappearance of MH370.

The police are working days and nights to piece together what actually happened to the ill fated flight, which departed KL International Airport (KLIA) on March 8.

Compared to other air craft disasters such as the Tanjung Kupang crash, the plane is yet to be located while the mystery does not seem to be unravelling.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar has vowed that the police would leave no stone unturned in the investigation.

“We are doing everything we can to get to the truth to what occurred to the aircraft.

“We are not discounting any leads or angles in the investigation,” he said when contacted on Thursday.

However, baseless rumours and the spread of unverified information could distract the authorities in the course of the investigation.

"I urge the public not to speculate on this case.

"Information will be revealed at an opportune time as we don't want to jeopardize the investigation," he said.

According to the IGP, the police have recorded the statements of 125 people, including the families of those on board as well as Department of Civil Aviation personnel.

While conceding it was a more complex investigation, Khalid said the police would perform a thorough investigation.

“Information will be revealed at an opportune time as we don’t want to jeopardise the investigation,” he said.

Bukit Aman assistant chief of the Inspector-General of Police secretariat Asst Comm Datin Asmawati Ahmad said the investigations on MH370 was unprecedented in its mystery as well as scope.

“It is definitely difficult compared to regular criminal cases.

“We are working with other countries to get to the truth of the matter,”she said.

ACP Asmawati said even for the Air France disaster, it took the authorities two years to recover the black box and close to three years to complete the investigation.

“It is even more difficult for us as we cannot pinpoint the location of the aircraft.

“Rest assured that we will never give up until we get to the truth,” she said.

She also hoped that the public could give the police ample space to investigate the case thoroughly.

The police have yet to rule out any of the four theories being investigated at the start of the investigation.

The theories - hijack, sabotage, psychological background of those board and personal troubles - are still being pursued by the police even after close to three weeks since the aircraft went missing.

Bukit Aman task force led by Federal CID director Comm Datuk Hadi is also working with foreign intelligence agencies.

Investigators are also working to recover the deleted data from Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah’s flight simulator.

Day 25 - Tuesday, 1 April 2014
  1. Today we are releasing the full transcript of communications between flight MH370 and Air Traffic Control Kuala Lumpur. The transcript has been shared with the families, and is attached as an Annex to this press release (click here for the transcript). There is no indication of anything abnormal in the transcript.
The transcript was initially held as part of the police investigation. Previously, Malaysia Airlines had stated initial investigations indicated that the voice which signed off was that of the co-pilot. The police are working to confirm this belief, and forensic examination of the actual recording is ongoing.
The international investigations team and the Malaysian authorities remain of the opinion that, up until the point at which it left military primary radar coverage, MH370’s movements were consistent with deliberate action by someone on the plane.

Day 35 - Friday, 11 April 2014
  1. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the mangosteens were only packed into crates in Muar before they were transported to KLIA and place aboard the missing jetliner. — Picture by Choo Choy MayKUALA LUMPUR, April 11 — The four tonnes of mangosteen stashed as part of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH370’s cargo were not harvested in Muar, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar clarified today, after reports pointed out that the Johor township does not even have mangosteen orchards.

Khalid said the local fruit was only packed into crates in Muar before they were transported to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and place aboard the missing jetliner.

“I did not say the mangosteens were from Muar. I said that the supplier was from Muar and that we will investigate everything, including the extent of who plucked the fruits,” Khalid told reporters after launching a police function at the Buddhist Maha Vihara here.

Khalid’s response comes after the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) asserted that mangosteens were not in season in Johor when the Boeing 777-200ER aircraft disappeared last month.

According to FAMA’s Johor branch director Faridul Atrash Md Mokri there were no orchards in the state that had produced the shipment that allegedly made part of the cargo onboard MH370.

Past news reports quoted Khalid saying that the fruits were sourced from Muar and that the police are digging into every nitty-gritty detail of the cargo, including information on the workers who plucked the fruit and the individuals who were supposed to receive the mangosteens in China.

Khalid added that they have recorded more than 205 statements in connection to the criminal investigation on the vanished flight en route to Beijing from KLIA on March 8 and which remains missing despite an international search involving over two dozen countries.

Australia is now leading the multi-nation hunt for the plane at the Indian Ocean where satellite data last tracked its signal before it disappeared entirely.

Despite having cleared all 227 passengers on board MH370 on hijacking, sabotage, psychological and personal problems, Khalid said investigation are still ongoing into the 12 crew members and their families.

“We have a focus (on the four areas of investigations) but I’m not at liberty to reveal... until at an official inquiry when the black boxes are discovered,” he said.
